Why AI assistants recommend your competitors and not you

You ask ChatGPT for the best options in your category and it names three competitors. You are not on the list. That is rarely random. AI assistants recommend the businesses they can find, read and confirm on sites they trust. When they skip you, one of six causes is usually behind it, and each one has a fix. Here is how to tell which one you have.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

Most assistants now search the web before they answer a buying question. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok all do it. They run a few searches, read the pages that come back, and build a short list from what those pages say. Your competitors get named because the pages the assistant read named them.

So the question is not just "is my site good?" It is "when an assistant researches my category, do the pages it reads mention me, and can it read my own site?"

The six usual causes

1. The sites the AI reads don't mention you

This is the most common cause. Answers to "best X for Y" questions lean on roundup articles, review sites, comparison pages and forum threads like Reddit. If those pages list your competitors and not you, the assistant has no reason to name you. Your own site, however good, is one source among many.

2. You have no page that answers the question

Buyers ask specific questions: "best payroll software for a 10-person restaurant," "affordable CPA for a small business in Grand Rapids." If no page on your site answers that question in plain words, a competitor's page that does will win.

3. Your competitors have comparison pages and you don't

Pages like "Brand vs Rival" and "Alternatives to Rival" are written for exactly the moment a buyer is choosing. Assistants read them, and the company that wrote the page frames the choice.

4. The AI can't read your site

Check three things. Your robots.txt may block the crawlers AI assistants use, such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Your key pages may carry a noindex tag. Or the content may only appear after JavaScript runs, which some crawlers skip. Any of these can keep an assistant from seeing what you offer.

5. It isn't clear what you sell, or who it's for

If your homepage, your listings and your social profiles describe you in different terms, the assistant can't match you to a buyer's question. A plain, consistent description of what you sell and who it's for, repeated across the web, helps it place you.

6. Not enough independent sources name you

Assistants trust what several sources agree on. A newer business with few reviews, listings or mentions looks less certain than a competitor that appears on ten sites, even if your product is better.

How to find out which one you have

  1. Ask the questions your buyers ask. Not your brand name. Ask for the best options in your category, for your type of customer, in your area if you serve one. Do it on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok, since they often disagree.
  2. Write down who gets named. The same two or three competitors across assistants point to cause 1 or 3. A different list on every assistant points to thin coverage, cause 6.
  3. Look at the sources each answer read. Perplexity shows them, and ChatGPT does when it searches. Those sites are your target list for listings, reviews and outreach.
  4. Check your own site. Look at robots.txt for blocked AI crawlers, confirm key pages are indexable, and see whether you have a page for each question and a comparison page for each main competitor.
  5. Fix in order. Access problems first, since nothing else works until the AI can read you. Then pages that answer the questions you lost. Then the outside sites the answers read.

What tool fixes this

Doing the steps above by hand takes a few hours, and the answers change from week to week. Tools in this space fall into two groups. Trackers such as Otterly.AI and Peec AI run a set of prompts every day and chart how often you are mentioned. They are good at showing the symptom. See the tools compared.

Citro is built for the cause. Each run asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok the questions your buyers ask, with live web search. It records who was named instead of you and which sites every answer read, checks your site for the access and page problems above, and gives you a 90-day plan. Every item in the plan is checked against your live site, so it won't tell you to build something you already have.

See who AI recommends instead of you

The free check asks ChatGPT and Gemini three buyer questions with live web search, then shows whether they recommend you, who they name instead, and which sites they read. About a minute, no card.

Common questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
Usually because the pages ChatGPT read while answering name your competitor and not you. When it searches the web, it builds its answer from roundup articles, review sites, comparison pages and forums. If those sources list a competitor, or if your own site has no page that answers the question, the competitor gets named.
How do I get AI assistants to recommend my business?
Make sure AI crawlers can read your site, publish pages that answer the exact questions your buyers ask, add comparison pages for your main competitors, and get listed or mentioned on the sites the assistants read for your category. Check results across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok, since each draws on different sources.
Does blocking AI crawlers stop AI from recommending me?
It can. If robots.txt blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, those assistants can't read your pages when they search, so they rely only on what other sites say about you. Most businesses that want to be recommended should allow them.
How long does it take to start showing up in AI answers?
It varies. Assistants that search the web can pick up a new page or listing once it is indexed, often within weeks. What a model knows from its training data changes more slowly. Re-check the same buyer questions every few weeks to see what moved.
What tool tells me why AI recommends my competitors?
Citro does. It asks five AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, shows who they name instead of you and which sites they read, checks your site, and returns a 90-day plan. The free check covers ChatGPT and Gemini with no card.
